The primary function of a router in a network is to connect multiple networks and forward messages between them. Routers manage traffic between different networks by determining the best paths for data packets to travel from the source to the destination. They analyze the destination IP address of packets and use routing tables to make decisions on where to send these packets, which helps ensure that data reaches its intended endpoint efficiently.

While encryption and data security are crucial aspects of network management, those functions are typically handled by other devices or software, not by routers themselves. Storing data locally is also not within the router’s primary role; this function is typically associated with devices such as servers or storage systems. A firewall, meanwhile, is a separate network security device that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. Although some routers integrate firewall capabilities, their fundamental purpose is focused on routing data between networks.
